Money is Time (or MIST) is the new format for our newsletters, and it's packed full of value—while still being 100% free, which is cool. Each week, you'll get thoughts on money and productivity, a stock I am watching (subscribers only), our latest articles, single-sentence summaries of some curated content (subscribers only), and any helpful and quality things I find that week. This is the new format.
With Gratitude,

THE GREEN ROOM.
MONEY THOUGHT
Hidden fees are known as the termites of personal finance — they're small, but they eat through everything over time.
Subscriptions are the new “hidden fees.”
Do you know how many different subscriptions you have? Which ones are no longer necessary, but still eating away at your money?
TICKER TALK
DoorDash (NASDAQ: DASH) has continued to grow like wildfire.
Q2 revenue, order volume, and order totals all increased by 20%+.
- End of 2023: Approximately $39.4 billion
- End of 2024: Approximately $72.2 billion
- Today: Approximately $104.77 billion
They're now turning a profit, which is a huge turning point. It's common for businesses to lose money for years until they build a stable brand (think Amazon).
DoorDash has built a stable brand.
Disclosure: Kalen personally owns shares of DASH and plans to be a long-term holder. As always, this isn't financial advice — just sharing what we're watching. This is not a solicitation to buy. Consult a financial advisor before making any investment decisions.

THE LARGEST COMPANY… EVER
NVIDIA (NVDA) makes up about 8% of the S&P 500.
So, you're probably invested in NVDA even if you don't own the individual stock.
Also, Nvidia became the first $4 trillion company in July.
Are they the largest company ever? Probably not.
The Dutch East India Company (VOC) peaked during the 1637 Tulip Mania bubble, with an estimated value of $7.9–$10.2 trillion in today's dollars—likely the largest company in history.
TIME HACK.
ON SYSTEMS
Productivity isn't about getting as much done as possible. It's about getting the right things done in a preferred time slot—efficacy over busyness.
James Clear (Atomic Habits) says, “You don't rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.”
Likewise, Morgan Housel (The Psychology of Money) writes, “Every five-year plan fails. Instead, build systems that work even when your plans don't.”
You don't need more time.
You don't need to “get more done.”
You need better systems.
How can you change your daily routine to create more margin? How can you prioritize to focus on what matters?

They're long sentences, but the articles are much longer.
1
Amazon's partnership with Hertz to launch used car sales on Amazon Autos—starting in four U.S. cities with plans to expand—sent Hertz shares higher but dragged down rivals like Carvana, CarMax, and Avis, as the tech giant's entry threatens their growth ambitions in a market where Hertz alone has 540,000 vehicles and Carvana hopes to someday sell 3 million annually. [Sherwood]
2
For high earners, traditional percentage-based budgeting like the 50/30/20 rule leads to lifestyle inflation, so a better approach is the “reverse budget,” where you define a fixed lifestyle cost, set concrete savings goals, and treat the remaining surplus as strategic capital for building wealth through debt payoff, tax-advantaged accounts, and investments. [Carry Letter]
3
Morningstar research over the past 20 years shows that expense ratios are the strongest predictor of mutual fund performance—with cheaper funds consistently outperforming pricier ones in nearly every period—and combining low fees with strong past pre-fee returns delivers the best future results, reinforcing that investors should start by favoring low-cost funds while also considering performance history. [Morningstar]

Klarna's* Q2 results showed 31% user growth to 111M, a 34% jump in merchants to 790K, and revenue up 20% to $823M, with adjusted profits of $29M despite a $53M net loss from restructuring, as the BNPL giant touts declining delinquency rates, expands partnerships with Walmart, Stripe, and eBay, rolls out banking services and a U.S. debit card, and resumes IPO preparations after pausing earlier this year due to trade-driven market volatility. [Payments Dive]

TJX (think TJ Maxx) shares hit an all-time high after second-quarter earnings and revenue topped estimates, same-store sales grew 4%, and management raised its full-year outlook despite slightly soft near-term guidance, underscoring the strength of its off-price model as consumers seek value and trade down for deals. [Sherwood]
