Who doesn't love Dr. Seuss? The Cat in the Hat is a huge hit around here!
A Cat in the Hat birthday party is one of the most fun, colorful themes you can plan—and the best part is, it doesn't have to cost a fortune.

I decided to go all out with the theme for a second birthday and I think it was a success!
I used free printables and things we had around the house as much as possible which helped cut down on the costs.
The great thing about Dr. Seuss parties is that they are classic and it's easy to find things online compared with the more “trendy” themes.
Cat In The Hat Party Ideas On A Budget
Decor is where this theme really shines—and you can do most of it yourself:
1. DIY Photo Backdrop
>reate a backdrop using a white sheet or poster board with red streamers or tape to mimic the Cat's hat stripes. Add a printable “Happy Birthday” banner for a fun photo spot.
2. Balloon Bouquets
Stick to red, white, and blue balloons. Group them in clusters for a high-impact look without spending much.
3. “Thing 1 & Thing 2” Decorations
Print out labels and tape them onto blue tissue paper pom-poms or even blue balloons to represent the characters.
4. Dollar Store Table Setup
For the tablecloth at my party, I bought two tablecloths from the Dollar Tree. One red and one white.
I think cut each one into strips and taped them back together to make one large stripey sheet. I think it looks fantastic for $2.50!
Another option is to use red plastic tablecloths, white plates, and blue napkins—all easy finds at budget stores.
Mix and match to keep the color scheme cohesive.
5. DIY Centerpieces
Fill jars or cups with shredded paper (or tissue paper) in blue and add printed character cutouts on sticks. Super affordable and customizable.
Or, keep it simple and use your cake as the centrepiece.
6. Book and Toy Display
If you already own The Cat in the Hat, use it as part of your decor!

Budget-Friendly Food Ideas
You don't need an elaborate menu to impress your guests—just stick to simple foods and give them a fun, themed twist:
1. “Thing 1 & Thing 2” Cupcakes
Bake or buy plain cupcakes and top them with blue icing. Add simple printable toppers labeled “Thing 1” and “Thing 2” for an instant themed treat.
2. Red & White Striped Snacks
Use items like strawberries and cream, or red and white popcorn (just add a few drops of food coloring to melted white chocolate and drizzle).
